RICH NEWBERG LAUNCHES BUFFALO JEWISH COMMUNITY FILM AND VIDEO ARCHIVE

"I’m so grateful to the JCC, WIVB-TV, and the station’s general manager Joe Abouzeid, for allowing me to share this collection with the Jewish community of Western New York. Putting it together was truly a labor of love. History, as told through the eyes of local broadcast journalists offers a living chronicle of community life and major events that help shape our destiny as a people."

"My greatest hope is that new generations of students will view this moving image history with great interest. Some incredible moments in time were captured on film and videotape. I believe the lessons we can learn from local Holocaust survivors are perhaps most important of all. Hearing their stories firsthand and producing them for a television audience helped me come to grips with history’s darkest chapter.”

“There are many upbeat stories in this collection that include wonderful family reunions of shtetl descendants, as well as the contributions of outstanding Jewish broadcasters, entertainers, religious leaders, and historical figures whose Buffalo legacies will live on forever.” - Rich Newberg

Did you know that 1 in 5 underserved households are not getting their kids involved in athletics because of the rising price of sporting equipment? Leveling the Playing Field is a nonprofit that collects and redistributes equipment to expand access and equity within youth sports and recreation programs in under-resourced communities. LPF expanded to a fourth warehouse location in Buffalo during Fall 2023 to ensure that all kids in Western NY can get off the sidelines!

All week, we will be collecting in the lobbies of both JCC Buffalo locations until October 30!

So clean out your garages and clear the yard of used sporting equipment so that kids who are less fortunate are able to enjoy them!

GRETCHEN S. GROSS MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT- HELP MAKE A LASTING IMPACT

Last fall, the JCC announced the establishment of the Gretchen S. Gross Memorial Endowment.  Named in memory of the late Gretchen S. Gross, past president and camp committee chair, the fund will support camp scholarships for children and youth photography classes at the JCC.  We have set a goal of $250,000 to ensure we can continue to provide and expand these incredible opportunities for our community in a way that will honor Gretchen for generations to come.  Thanks to family and friends, of Gretchen, we have committed nearly $50,000 to this effort over the last year.  Now we invite the community to help the JCC increase the impact of this fund while cementing Gretchen’s legacy through the endowment.

WALK OF FLAME PAVERS AVAILABLE

It is not too late to purchase a paver to support Camp Centerland and the Walk of Flame, part of the new Barbara S. Burwick Memorial Firepit.  The firepit was a big hit with campers all summer, and was used to make everything from s’mores to homemade pita bread.  Pavers make a unique, permanent, and affordable gift to honor a loved one, past campers, or simply your love of the JCC.  We will continue to engrave until the walkway is full.  Pavers can be purchased online here

Arthur and Lilly: The Girl and the Holocaust Survivor

In 1939, Arthur's Jewish parents sent their son abroad on a so-called Kindertransport ("children's transport"), hoping to save him from the Holocaust. The separation is a traumatic experience for the ten-year-old. Although he is rescued - from Austria via France to the United States - his family is murdered by the Nazis. He never sees them again. Sixty-five years later: During a visit to his parents' former apartment in Vienna, Austria, Arthur Kern meets eleven-year-old Lilly Maier. A decisive encounter for both of them, which not only shapes Lilly's further life but also leads to Arthur receiving a long-lost legacy from his parents.

A moving tale of two lives that fatefully cross paths, and an immensely knowledgeable insight into an unknown Holocaust story: the rescue of hundreds of Jewish children to America on a Kindertransport.
