“We’re spending Hanukkah in Santa Monica”– Jews and the Art of Song Parody
We all know the significant influence Jewish humorists have had on American popular culture. This program examines a subset of that phenomenon – the art of song (musical) parody. Whether it’s in the work of celebrated Jewish parodists like Allan Sherman, Tom Lehrer. Mel Brooks, Victor Borge, Danny Kaye, Frank Jacobs, The Capitol Steps. Two Live Jews. Randy Rainbow, et al — or in the do-it-yourself parodies included in Purim spiels, Passover seders, private parties/simchas or even during Shabbat services (Adon Olam, anyone?). Take a trip down memory lane as we celebrate Hanukkah and share a few laughs to usher in 2021.
Program co-sponsored with Congregation Beth Abraham, produced by Marty Kerker, with special musical guests Grant Golden and Yonina Andrea Foster.
