“The American Jewish Community in the 21st Century”, by Dr. Gerhard Falk, seeks to demonstrate how a small, impoverished group of immigrants rose from the slums of America’s big cities to wealth, education, and political power in the course of one century. It describes the challenging and rewarding path taken by American Jews throughout the twentieth century. Surely no one would have believed that in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the descendants of these “Hebrews,” as the non-Jewish citizens called them, would become members of America’s upper class, including billionaires, great physicians, leading lawyers and politicians, superb athletes, and founders of whole industries such as the movie industry in California and the clothing industry in New York City.
Dr. Gerhard Falk is the author of thirty books, numerous journal articles, and essays. He is a holocaust survivor who came to the United States during the Second World War. A veteran of the 94th Infantry, Dr. Falk earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at Western Reserve University and a doctorate at the University at Buffalo at the expense of the “Servicemen’s Readjustment Act,” also known as “The GI Bill of Rights,” and subsequently received a scholarship which financed his doctorate.
Dr. Falk was a professor at Buffalo State College for 59 years. In his career, Dr. Falk was awarded The State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, the State University College President’s Award for Creativity and Scholarship, and the State University of New York Research Foundation Award for Scholarship.
