The Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo is pleased to announce that Michael Garcia, Camp Director at the JCC’s Camp Centerland on the Irving M. Shuman Campgrounds, has been appointed Upstate New York Standards Co-Chair to the American Camp Association (ACA).
The American Camp Association is a community of camp professionals whom, for more than a century, have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs.
Garcia, a volunteer with ACA for more than a decade, has visited and worked with staff at more than 20 camps around the country. “I’m honored to have been asked to contribute a leadership role with ACA,” says Garcia. “There is no better experience than summer camp for children to learn about themselves and others, develop social skills, life skills, unplug from technology, promote independence, and so much more,” says Garcia.
Serving families in Amherst, Buffalo, and surrounding areas, Camp Centerland is the JCC’s premiere summer day camp for children entering Kindergarten through grade 10. Located in Getzville, NY, the campgrounds cover 19 acres of athletic fields, wooded nature trails, adventure challenge courses, activity shelters, and more. The summer of 2019 marks a new level of quality for Camp Centerland as it enrolls in the ACA national accreditation process, reviewing more than 260 standards to ensure program quality, health, and safety for all campers and staff. Camp leadership has been reviewing policies and procedures to enhance the camp moving forward.
