Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo
June 20, 2017
Richard Zakalik, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo announced a construction start date of July 5th, 2017 for the Holland Family Building at 787 Delaware Ave. The project was originally announced more than a year ago. Plans have been reviewed by the Linwood Association and have been approved by the City of Buffalo Preservation Board.
Construction will include the enclosure of an 1800 square feet patio facing Linwood Avenue at the back of the building. An indoor playground for young children will be constructed for member families and participants in the JCC’s Early Childhood program. That program has grown from fewer than 60 children ten years ago to more than 200 children when the project is complete. JCC president Susan Freed-Oestreicher noted that: “The growth of our program, due in part by the rapid growth of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, has given us the confidence to expand our facilities and provide state-of-the-art space for our children and members.”
Additional work will reconfigure and modernize space for 40 additional infants and 20 additional after-school participants. Relocation into extensively renovated space will happen for group fitness classes, cycling, Yoga and adult discussion groups. New windows, HVAC systems, lobbies and entrances will complete the multi-million dollar project. Work is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2018 school year and the 70th anniversary of the construction of the international style building. K1 Architecture is the architect and BRD Construction is the project manager.
Major funding for the project will come from a matching grant provided by the Nathan Benderson Family, longtime supporters of the JCC and many other Western New York, not-for-profit agencies that benefit families and underserved populations. Variety Club of Buffalo is providing funds for a fully-accessible basketball and play space to be created from an under-used racquetball court. Additional funding will be sought over the next few years from government sources, foundations, corporations and private individuals. Naming opportunities are available for many of the to-be-created spaces.
